Growing local economies
(vii)

Background
On 3 April 2022, John Garner, a farmer from Great Missenden in the UK, passed
away aged 99. In his will and in accordance with the wishes of his late father,
Rotarian Joseph Edward (known as Teddy) Garner, he bequeathed a sum of money
to be invested by The Rotary Foundation with the accrued interest to be used to
support a UK scholar to study in Melbourne, Australia, and a scholar from
Melbourne to study in the UK in alternate years.
Teddy Garner enjoyed association with six Rotary clubs, 3 in the UK and 3 in
Australia. It was his vision to provide a Global Scholarship for the furthering of
goodwill and better friendships between the people of England and Australia.

The Rotary Garner Scholarship
Global Grant Scholarships fund postgraduate level coursework or research for one to
four academic years. A key feature of Global Scholarships is the partnership between
the Rotary district or club in the study location (host sponsor) and the Rotary district
or club in the scholar’s home country (international sponsor).
This Rotary Garner Scholarship is open to UK graduates, except for Rotarians and
their immediate family. (Rotaractors are eligible to apply)
Applicants must be UK citizens and reside near a Rotary club in District 1260 (Beds
Bucks and Herts) or District 1130 (London). Applications must be made on the
enclosed application form (see Related Documents) and be submitted to their chosen
Rotary club who will manage the application to The Rotary Foundation. Note that
each Rotary club may only propose one applicant.
Shortlisted candidates must be available for in-person interviews in or near London.
(Reasonable travel expenses will be covered.)
The outcome of the selection process will be announced by the end of June 2025.
The Rotary club local to the scholar will be responsible for submitting the Global
Scholarship application in accordance with the published guidelines. The successful
candidate will be responsible for obtaining their place at the chosen study institution
and securing any required visas to commence studies at their selected Melbourne
tertiary institution in 2026. The Global Scholarship application will not be approved
by The Rotary Foundation until the scholar has been accepted by the study
institution.
On arrival in Australia to commence studies, a local Rotary club, nominated by the
Rotary District Foundation team, will act as the Host Sponsor club. That club will
assist the student to visit local Rotary clubs to encourage fellowship and friendship
between the two countries.

Study Institutions
List of Tertiary Institutions in Melbourne, Australia (not
exhaustive) in Alphabetical Order
The “Rotary Garner Scholarship” provides a postgraduate scholarship to a tertiary
institution in Melbourne, Australia. This appendix provides a helpful but
nonexhaustive list of universities in Melbourne, Australia, which UK scholars can
consider as part of their application for the Rotary Garner Scholarship.
Applications for other Australian universities outside of Melbourne may be
considered but only by exception and would require a compelling rationale. In all
circumstances, the course of study must relate to one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus
and UK scholars need to undertake their own due diligence to fulfil this scholarship
requirement.
